WHEN REVIVAL COMES...

What will happen when revival comes to America?  Will everyone start going to church?  Will everyone suddenly begin treating one another with respect?  Just how will revival change America?   Well, when revival hit Wales in 1906, it closed all the bars and houses of prostitution.  No laws of prohibition were passed.  They weren't necessary.  People just stopped drinking and fooling around.   We could expect to see drug use in America stop, in revival.

National revivals have, in fact, had tremendous effect on crime in general.  Historians, describing a period of revival, frequently refer to it as a time when people are "saturated with God."  When a community is so filled with the presence of God, little time or desire is left for criminal pursuits.

During periods of revival, whole weeks have passed in major cities without a single crime reported.   Revival produces renewed family unity.  Divorce declines, children excel, and the educational environment thrives.

Most Americans are not even aware that 106 out of 108 of the earliest institutions of learning were founded as result of Christian revivals, including schools such as Harvard, Yale, Princeton, William and Mary, etc.   These schools, and nearly all the others, were opened during periods of revival for the expressed purpose of Bible study.

That's right, Harvard, William and Mary, and Yale were originally "Bible Colleges!"

So, when revival comes, we should expect to see the test scores of our children head back up--right now our children test the lowest of all industrialized nations.   Social concerns will also be effected by revival.  Most of the original hospitals and philanthropic institutions, such as the Salvation Army, were established by Christians during revival.   One historian calls revival "the helper of the poor, the friend of the prisoner, the liberator of the slave, the visitor of the sick, the comforter of the dying."

Will revival effect racism and bigotry?  You bet!  It was, after all, the great revival of the 1840's (the largest revival in American history) that led Lincoln to abolish slavery.  He wrote: "By the grace of God" slavery would end.   Noted historian William Wolf wrote (in 1963) that "No president has ever had the detailed knowledge of the Bible that Lincoln had."  Lincoln was the product of national Christian revival.

History teaches us that America's greatness is the direct result of Christian revival.  In fact, it could even be said that this nation was built upon Christian revival.  Most of the original colonies were founded by Christian groups, many by ministers of the gospel.   Unfortunately, America has not experienced anything even resembling a true national revival since the first decade of this century.  We have wandered far from God.  All of our institutions evidence this decline.

The time has come to get "back to basics."  We must have national revival.  We must do II Chron. 7:14:  "If my people, who are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land."   I challenge you to pray for national revival, now!   Do your part to make America truly great, again!
